Re: [Dunedin-SitP] All Natural Snake Oil

A few years back the organisers of the South Island Coast-to-Coast endurance race were told by their insurers to warn participants that wet rocks are slippery. This instruction evoked nationwide hilarity, mockery and derision and has not been mentioned since.

Actually if you don't have insurance you are pretty much screwed. I got laid off in May, and my insurance ran our in June. It's one of the reasons I came home, the other being Chemical Pharmaceutical jobs (I have a PhD in Chemistry) are few and far between. The work is in India and China mostly. So I am reskilling as a biochemist.

Suing is actually not as bad as it was. The 1990's was pretty bad I am told. But these days you see less frivolous cases, and more serious ones. Insurance runs out if you are really messed up by something, and thus you need to get treated somehow.

I too spent 20 years living in the US - remember they have no socialised
medicine or ACC - a lot of people, who can't afford insurance, depend on being
able to sue in order to get services equivalent to what we take for granted

I'm not saying it's the best way to do things, or 'right. but it's the way it
is. Remember before ACC? when people wouldn't give their friends rides in their
car in case they had an accident - we used to be like that too.
